Lost Highway

February 10th 2010:

Watched the film ‘Lost Highway’ by David Lynch, although the film wasn’t to my own personal preference there were some artistic elements throughout the film that I could appreciate. Some of the notes I jotted down during the film:

* Lighting techniques; Light vs Dark, having the actor highlighted by the light coming in through the window.

* Zooming in on facial features, e.g. Eyes, mouth. Emphasizing emotions in this case fear.

* Birdseye view of the actors – Voyeuristic style.

* Reversing the dialogue, making the audience try and guess what the actors are saying.

In addition to watching the film, when I returned to London I took a trip to the National Portrait Gallery. Although the pieces here are photography, I thought it would aid me looking at the portraits and how one can capture an emotion in just one shot, i.e. Melancholy, innocence, pensive thought etc.
