The Triumph of Spirit by YSL...

February 28th 2010

Today I managed to find a clip for the new YSL manifesto film for the S/S 10 collection with the fabulous Natalia Vodianova.

The imagery throughout was really well thought out considering its simply somebody filming a photo shoot. The color blocking lighting of red white and blue fitted perfectly. This could possibly work as an idea with our own film, since it fits with the colors of the Serbian flag.

Here is a clip of the film:

A history of Yugoslavia

February 24th 2010

Following our new plans for the film, I have begun researching into the history of Serbia (Yugoslavia) as a country, simply to get some background knowledge if we want to be able to successfully capture the essence of what background our designer has come from if this is to be the opening scenes of the film.

From further research, the country has a devastating yet rich military history, looking at Illincic's designs you can see this regimental power status come through, examples from her S/S 10 collection.

The Concept developed...

February 19th 2010

Following our tutorial with Geraldine yesterday, pitching our storyboard and narrative for our film. We have decided to change the story. We took inspiration from the Halston film that was shown to us in last Thursdays film lecture with Dennis.

Drawing from this inspiration, we want to emulate a transition through time and space like the Halston film. However the key difference with our film will be to highlight the actress as our designer, coming over from Serbia (her birthplace) to London establishing herself as a designer in the big city; in a nutshell a rags to riches montage. The audience will be able to see the change in time not only through the location but through the clothing, which mirrors the designs of Illincic.

Ballerinas for Hagen Daaz

February 12th 2010

Had a tutorial with Geraldine today, I proposed the ideas that Charlotte and myself have had. She recommended I change a couple of things. Following this I saw an advert that was similarly linked to the ideas that Geraldine was talking about.

Haagen Dazs advert.

I really love the aesthetics to this advert, the idea is simple even though there is no verbal speech I like how the director has put subtitles of what the actors would say. The camera angles really capture the essence of the magical scene between the two actors

Lost Highway

February 10th 2010:

Watched the film ‘Lost Highway’ by David Lynch, although the film wasn’t to my own personal preference there were some artistic elements throughout the film that I could appreciate. Some of the notes I jotted down during the film:

* Lighting techniques; Light vs Dark, having the actor highlighted by the light coming in through the window.

* Zooming in on facial features, e.g. Eyes, mouth. Emphasizing emotions in this case fear.

* Birdseye view of the actors – Voyeuristic style.

* Reversing the dialogue, making the audience try and guess what the actors are saying.

In addition to watching the film, when I returned to London I took a trip to the National Portrait Gallery. Although the pieces here are photography, I thought it would aid me looking at the portraits and how one can capture an emotion in just one shot, i.e. Melancholy, innocence, pensive thought etc.

Pure

February 8th 2010

Really like the DKNY advert for their new perfume ‘Pure’, the lighting, the music, the setting to sum up in two words emotive and beautiful.

On further research, I have found the name of the composer of the music, which stood out most for me…Bob Mede ‘Raindrops and Moondrops’

Gina Glover "Liminal World"

The other day I was reading about an upcoming exhibition for photographer Gina Glover, the exhibit entitled ‘Liminal World’, looked interesting simply due to how the artist drew inspiration from something so abnormal to end with the final pictures shown in the exhibition. I felt the type of lighting and setting for each of her pieces may possibly be fitting for our film; Dream like haze.
